If you would like to help us make a happy ending to this story about the 1,000 rats rescued, there are many ways you can help directly and indirectly. If you are a rescue or shelter interested in taking some of the rats to place up for adoption through your own adoption program, please visit Information for Rescues & Shelters.
Adopt a Rat
Rats will be available for adoption starting on December 5th at Andy's Pet Shop in San Jose, when male rats and young female rats who were too young to be pregnant at the time of the rescue will first be made available for adoption. In the weeks following, more and more rats will be made available for adoption as they clear gestation watch so we are sure they are not pregnant, finish medical treatment, or finish being socialized.
Rats will be adopted in same-sex non-breeding pairs or social groups, and those that can't live compatibly with rats of the same gender will be spayed/neutered before being adopted out.
Volunteer at the Rat Shelter
We are in need of volunteers at the rat shelter to help with a variety of tasks, including feeding rats, cleaning cages, fixing equipment, cleaning the shelter space, organizing paperwork, handling adoptions and more. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail lauren@northstarrescue.org or visit Andy's Pet Shop to sign up.
Transport Rats
Many of these rats have safe havens waiting for them in rescues or shelters in California and beyond. If you can help transport rats, please visit our the
North Star Rescue group on Yahoo Groups to coordinate with other volunteers.
