Hamster is a cute little creation. You can own a hamster, but its level of friendliness depends on its type. Also, its gender and how tame it is determines its friendliness level. But these little creatures must be handled properly and should be cared gently.
If you own a hamster, then you may be wondering: Do hamsters eat cheese? And the answer is yes; they can eat cheese but in smaller quantities.
If we talk about cheese, then it is a very healthy product to eat. It contains vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, protein, phosphorus, and riboflavin. So, with all these vitamins and minerals, you will think that you can feed your hamster some pieces of cheese every day to make it a healthy pet, but in reality, you are wrong.
In order to confirm whether the cheese is beneficial for a hamster or not, it is necessary to focus on the diet of a wild hamster. The reason for this is that people have recently started keeping hamsters as pets. They are thousands of years old, so they can only digest those foods what they have been eating in the wild for many years.
If we talk about the food that these wild hamsters eat, then most of their food items are related to plant. They love eating grains, nuts, vegetables, seeds, cracked corn, and fruits. Also, they can eat insects and lizards, and even small frogs when required.
So, after knowing what the wild hamsters eat, it has now become evident that you can’t feed cheese to hamsters.
Cheese has lactose
As cheese has lactose, so it is not a healthy diet for hamsters. The reason for this is that their body is not made to process and digest lactose.
A large amount of cheese can be fatal for a hamster or cause serious digestive problems. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t give cheese to hamsters. You can give cheese in smaller amounts to make them happy. Also, they will get some nutritional benefits as well.
What is the proper way to feed cheese to hamsters?
Now, the question arises, if the cheese in smaller amounts is not bad for hamsters, then what is the proper way to feed cheese to hamsters?
It is a fact that hamsters do love cheese, but it is your responsibility to keep your pets away from eating cheese in large amounts.
The proper way of feeding cheese to hamsters is to give a small piece two to three times a week. This is the recommended amount. If you give more than that, then it may cause problems for your hamster. Also, your cheese must be a standard cheese like a mild cheddar or Cottage cheese. But make sure that it is fresh and not the stored one.
Can all types of hamsters eat cheese?
Cheese is safe for all types of hamsters but again in a smaller quantity. Even the dwarf hamsters can eat cheese despite being the smallest type. They need the same number of calories as the Syrian hamsters, which is the most common type of hamsters kept as pets.
